Fall Back Into School

Since one has moved to another place like Sweden, one should prolly think there will be more place and time to take the runs there. Whether it be in the forest that surrounds mostly an entire city, or just through the city center where “cozy” buildings stand (sometimes a city centre would just have a two-story building as its tallest).

Of course, that was possible if only I did not have to spend five days of my waking hours preparing to go to school, which would end at 1430H or 1600H. When I get home, I need to study some more, continue my portfolio, clean our place, and prepare food.

My brother always said an ultramarathon, or a marathon for that matter, is 90% mental and 10% still mental. There is a race here every winter where you use walking sticks, called Vasaloppet during winter. The distance is 9 Swedish miles, where 1 mile is equivalent to 10 kilometers (normal kilometers haha). Maybe I will train for that instead.

As for now, the closest training I get is when I hit the gym if I got the time and the energy I spend walking to school.

I can still remember the time when I first listened to new wave music, I was a freshman in high school then. It was one of those mundane afternoons where I was scanning the frequency modulation band for relaxing music to listen to while solving Algebra problems.

That moment had rippled through my life – the attitude, the rock and roll lifestyle and most of all the music – finally, an alternative to the jokes from the supposedly number one pop radio station at the time.

The last few days of their broadcast were great : Zach and Joey in the morning (in the afternoon and in cyberspace) and Tom Lupton’s eulogy to mention a few, brought back happy memories from 23 years ago.

Thank you NU 107 for rocking this runner’s life.

Fall Has Started

12°C, partially cloudy and the sun shining really bright at times…definitely the perfect run in a long day while waiting for my fiance to get home from work after checking on websites and cleaning up his place. Went to Sweden to visit him for a month, I guess one last run alone before flying back to Manila (aside from the long walks we have that would last at least a couple of hours) is what I needed so that the hours of wait until he gets home would seem faster

Rocksmurfen and CrazyGrace

As I started to walk towards the jog route, I started to freeze a little and got a runny nose so I started running. I’d stop awhile to see if a car would hit me, and sometimes to stare back at drivers slowing down to look at me. I think it was because I had dark hair and looked foreign (uh, let’s say…Asian? Duh! Haha!) or probably because I only had my really thin Nike running shorts, New Balance running shirt and a windbreaker while the other two joggers / runners I saw were wearing thick jogging pants and fleece jackets. Hehe, stubborn might actually be an appropriate word. Lazy to dress up? Hmmm…

I will keep this short because there’s nothing technical about what I did, it was just a normal “stroll” down the jogging path around here. Had I been training, I would have gone longer at this temperature. Until then, all I have to show is the video below. I will be leaving soon, and though it will be very lonely and sad for both of us, we gotta keep our spirits high. Not the best thing to say but here it goes anyway: Manila, I am back to rocking your heart out this weekend!

Century Tuna Superbods Run 2010: Part 2

Thanks to Roadmarker for inviting me to join her during the presscon last Thursday, January 28, 2010, in National Sports Grill, Greenbelt 3. I really miss this sport, and being in a crowd of runners just made the trip worth the break from working for upcoming events and web projects.

A short presentation for the 21K route was shown, and I’d like to say…I think there’s a formula to everything, especially running (even if I’m just a recreational runner / enthusiast). You don’t just run, because you’ll only end up injuring yourself…just an observation = )

A 50k moment in a poet’s play

I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to run the 2nd BDM test run even if I am not participating on the race itself. This is my first attempt at an ultra-marathon and I’m glad I tried it.

With the strong CAMANAVA Runners

When we arrived at the Bataan shrine in Mariveles, it felt quite different, considering that the first time I have been here , it was dark … because the 1st BDM strarted at midnight.

The 1st 7 kilometers were well, very difficult, most runners (me included) walked the up hills. We were very lucky last Saturday that the weather was a bit overcast, because had it been sunny all throughout, I may not have been able to finish the race.

Now I understand what Isko says when he speaks about attitude and mental toughness … having completed a couple of full marathons, I thought that running for 8 more kilometers would be easy – I was wrong!

My easy pace became difficult, my target times – lost … I was worried that after 4 hours, I haven’t even reached the 30 KM mark. In fact, I had doubts that I will be able to complete this daunting task.

Then, it all came to me – the reason why we were all doing this : to pay tribute to those brave souls who marched these same streets of death more than half a century ago.

After all, who am I compared to them? What is running a mere 50 kms compared to the distance our martyrs have traveled? Who am I to complain?

102 kilometers may just be a moment in a poet’s play, but for me this is as real as it gets.

Expensive Registration Fees

This is going to be a very short post. I know that I am not the only one who thinks that the registration fees are too expensive.

Pardon me for my un-educated question, but why is it that races tend to be more expensive when there are brand sponsors ?

I mean, what is the point of having them if the runner pays for the entire shindig anyway ?

And honestly, how much really goes to the selected beneficiary ?

…and so goes the era where my brother will have the pleasure of calling me “the recreational runner” again and again (being the youngest in the group and having no discipline in training). Well, try living my lifestyle…that’s what one of his friends told him, and it was enough to shut him up for about a couple of hours. Haha, no. Not enough time with the stress I’m going through.

I have resigned from work, tho, and I MIGHT just have enough time to run every morning before I start on my freelance web projects. All that will have to wait, until I finish what I am busy with right now. The past several weeks had mainly consisted of me hosting the Friendster Live Sessions: The Bar Tour, while working on pending personal projects and freelance web work that I want to finish before the year ends.

Thanks to Anna, I got invited to the press launch of the pioneering show in the local TV scene focused on running in the 3rd floor of R.O.X. – High Street tonight. I know I have to sleep already but I just can’t get the show out of my mind right now! Woohoo! I’m just so excited to watch its first episode on Sunday, November 8: 2:45PM on QTV!

Ron De Los Reyes – Opening Speech

Was able to personally talk to Ron De Los Reyes and he’s told us about running events back in its boom in the 80’s. He said that it was a bit different back then, if there was an event in one place, there wouldn’t be another race event anywhere else in the metro. Now, you’ll have to choose from all the events that happen all at the same time I guess running has definitely taken its place in this generation of health-conscious earthlings!

Who would actually want to miss on the good stuff? Adidas giveaways, Timex bags, Camelbak hydration packs, and the best of all: a Timex wristwatch! Winner of the grand prize actually had Crazy as his first name, and my heart almost stopped. Turned out the crazy winner had a different second name, and NOT grace. Phbt! Good part was, no one came home empty-handed, that’s for sure! Everyone had to pass by the booth to claim their Adidas Goodie Bag! Woohoo! Women had Pure Lightness Eau De Toilette and Perfumed Deodorant Spray, the men had Ice Dive Deo Body Spray, Roll-on Deodorant, and Shower Gel!

Subic International Marathon
October 24, 2009

Here I thought, being a part of the support van was as easy as … handing out the bottles in succession, or whenever they need it. Giving them GU when they need it already, and taking videos and pictures of them while listening to feel-good music and resting my back on the rows of seats in the support van (haven’t had enough decent sleep rushing projects just to be able to come through for my brother). Yeah, THAT part was easy. Stopping every how-many-minutes was very tiring! Waiting for them if they needed anything more was stressful! I’m just glad Kuya Eugene and Kuya Ian aka Seabiskwit were able to finish their first marathon together! Woohoo!

During the early part of the race: The three guys, whom I will label as the “Tres Hermanos”, Kuya Isko aka Super Pinoy, Kuya Ian aka Seabiskwit, and Kuya Eugene

Tried to get a shot of runners halfway through the race, even if water in almost four aid stations have run out!

Was trying to get a shot of the Tres Hermanos under this supposed good lighting spot we found along the road where we parked and saw the Running Ninja instead. Go Sam!

With the van support backing them up, I sorta checked up on how they were doing on the road while asking if they needed anything.

This part of the highway was too dark so Kuya Isko had to use a headlamp to help them be guided.

Support for Subic Marathon! What’s the Magic Word!?

And so it has come to this…just a day before it begins: Bolt’s first official marathon! His friends will be bringing a van and I’m hitching! We’re cooking food tonight and bringing stuff for support every 3KMs. If you’re in need of anything and if we can provide, just say the magic word: HOLLA!

After that, Adidas King of the Road! See you all and have fun for those running the Subic International Marathon tomorrow! Woohoo!
